We have been blessed to live, raise our family, and work in Lincoln. We have seen first-hand the many projects and organizations supported by the Lincoln Community Foundation through the generosity of Lincolnites before us.

At the time when it was not a popular stance, Bert was on a lifelong search for scientific trusts. It was his mission to show how science and religion went hand-in-hand and were not in opposition. He published over 200 scientific articles and monographs, many of them jointly with colleagues representing different interdisciplinary fields. He studied in 60 different countries and assembled a tremendous amount of data on the changing environment of the world and the migrations and extinctions of animals and plants. Cooper Foundation
The Cooper Foundation, a private foundation established in 1934, was founded by Joseph Cooper. Joseph had a great interest in the theatre business and developed a chain of theatres in Nebraska, Oklahoma and Colorado. After establishing the Cooper Foundation, he donated proceeds from his theatre interests to the Foundation to provide gifts to organizations in Nebraska. Joseph's donations to the Foundation continued until his death in 1946, at which point he bequeathed his theatre business to the Foundation. His theatre chain grew and flourished, and later, in the mid-70s, was sold by the Foundation. This sale provided a significant gift to the Cooper Foundation's endowment. The Cooper Foundation supports programs in the areas of education, human services, the arts, humanities and the environment.

NARRATIVE:
In 1906, Colonel Arthur Weimer Thompson started crying farm sales and auctions in York County. Eventually he sold purebred swine, lambs and cattle at the principal venues such as the Chicago International Stock Show, The Denver Stock Show, the Kansas City American Royal, the San Francisco Cow Palace and the National Ram Show in Salt Lake City, Utah. In later years he specialized in Black Angus and Hereford cattle and eventually, from 1943 until his retirement n 1953, in Herefords exclusively.
Col. Thompson's impact on the live stock industry went beyond the sales arena. As an advocate of modern methods in animal husbandry, he worked closely with the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture (now Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources) to spread his message. He used the proof of his sales record, his knowldge of livestock values and the pulpit of the auctioneer to urge constantly and convincingly farmers, ranchers and purebred cattleman to upgrade the quality of their livestock. He encouraged and influenced the annual 4-H sales at the Nebraska State Fair. He 'cried' the first Ak-Sar-Ben 4-H sale and did so, again for no fee, for many years thereafter.
In 1950, Time magazine wrote about ' ... brisk, blue-eyed 'Colonel' Arthur Weimer Thompson, dean of U.S. cattle auctioneers ... Thompson has probably done more than anyone else to make Herefords the highest-priced cattle breed. In the last 42 years, Auctioneer Thompson has knocked down $250 million worth of cattle at more than 7,000 sales all over the U.S. His record $506,000 for a single day's selling set at the auction of Colorado Rancher Dan Thorton's Hereford herd in 1947, still stands ... as does the $65,000 bid at which he sold the prize bull Baca Duke II last year. Only eight Hereford bulls have ever been sold for more than $50,000. Colonel Thompson has auctioned them all ...'
In 1947, Colonel Thompson and his wife established the Arthur W. and Viola Thompson Scholarship at the University of Nebraska. It is given to outstanding second semester sophomore or junior Animal Science majors.

"Enjoying, appreciating and loving Lincoln is a three generation family tradition. My grandparents, Mary and Max Mozer, married, worked and raised their children in Lincoln. I want Lincoln to continue to be for others what it has been for me and my family. As Helen Walton, of Walmart fame, said, "It's not what you gather but what you scatter that tells what kind of life you have lived." In 1867, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Coryell, along with their son, George, traveled to Nebraska in their covered wagon and made their home on the ground that is now known as Coryell Park, located in Brock, Nebraska. The wagon box was the first Coryell home in Nebraska and the young family lived there until they built a house. This house eventually became home to two more Coryell children, L.L., Sr. and Nettie.
In 1934, the Coryell homestead was converted into a free park. It was dedicated by Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Coryell, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Coryell, Jr., and Lorraine Leland Coryell.
The park is home to several Coryell buildings such as the Coryell Chapel, the Coryell, Treasure House (which includes the doll collection of L.L. Coryell, Sr.'s wife), the Coryell Mausoleum, the bridal home of Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Coryell, Sr., and the Coryell Auditorium. Also on display are reproduction of the Parker Log Cabin and the Coryell homestead house.

I was fortunate enough to inherit family farms in Custer County. My great grandfather homesteaded the farm I grew up on. After graduating from high school, I came to Lincoln and never left.
Having spent the last 48 years here, I consider Lincoln home. My parents and my brother are all deceased and I have no other family. And no one who wanted to continue farming, so I sold the farms in 2014 and began to consider how to share my good fortune.
After four years of disorganized giving, I was advised to work with the Lincoln Community Foundation, which I was well aware of having lived here for many years. The people I know and have met at the Foundation have been so helpful and have given me good direction to continue sharing.

"Lincoln has been a great city for us to raise our family and practice our professions. Our children are now grown, and we continue to love living and working here. There are so many who strengthen the future of Lincoln with their generous gifts of time, talent and treasure.
The Lincoln Community Foundation has helped us channel our gifts to local programs that support the things we care about the most. Along the way, we believe that the more we give, the more we are blessed with to give anew.
In reviewing our estate planning, we made a commitment to support the Lincoln Community Foundation as Lincoln Benefactors. We enjoyed exploring what might be possible to make a difference for years to come. We are happy to encourage others to do the same."

Mary and I feel very fortunate to have lived almost all of our lives in Lincoln. Lincoln is special because of its people.
The educational level of a Lincolnite is almost two years higher than the national average. The Lincoln Public Schools system is among the best in the nation: Lincoln has three universities, it has more churches per capita than most cities, and the YMCA facilities and programs are outstanding. Because of all of this, the philanthropic support for worthy projects in Lincoln is extremely strong. The Lincoln Community Foundation leads the way.
Mary and I raised our four children here. Mary taught in the Lincoln Public Schools as an elementary teacher. I served for many years as a member of the Lincoln School Board. I have been deeply involved with the YMCA and other community organizations. In short, we love Lincoln.
We are doing everything philanthropically we can to keep all of these great things in place for the next generation to follow. The Lincoln Community Foundation has helped us immeasurably to make this possible.

It is our intent to leave our legacy not with 'things' but rather knowing that when we are gone, there will always be funds available in the Lincoln community to continue to support what we believed in. This ensures that not one agency is the recipient of our funds, rather that the needs of the community at that time are being met. We also have Donor Advised funds specific to our personal interests. QUOTE:
Donald Hamann was born with a natural gift for storytelling, a true interest in people, and a deep love for his family and community.
In 1957, after graduating from UNL in business, he joined his father as they assumed ownership of Lincoln’s first fine jewelry store, Sartor’s. From then on, it became Sartor Hamann Jewelers. Don was well known in the jewelry industry as President of Jewelers of America, Chairman of the Board of Jewelers Mutual Insurance, and was actively involved in other regional and national trade organizations.
As a local business leader, he was president of the Downtown Lincoln Association and active in the Chamber of Commerce. Don and his wife Phoebe, were ardent supporters of many charities and foundations. They were particularly passionate about supporting music and the arts as well as music education in the Lincoln Public Schools.
An avid gardener and rose lover, Don made a generous donation to the City of Lincoln in 2006 to assist in the complete renovation of the Municipal Rose Garden at 27th and “C” Streets. In honor of his lead gift, the garden was renamed The Hamann Rose Garden.
The Hamann family has always believed in philanthropic gifting, and it is our hope that this bequest through LCF will help to make a difference in the community for many decades to come.

QUOTE:
In the life of Phoebe Hamann, there thrived a sense of duty to community, and a love of children, family and church. Flowing through it all was the music. She felt strongly that the arts should be nourished by society and that they contributed to being a well-rounded person.
Among her many achievements was the creation of programs that brought music into the Lincoln Public Schools. In 1970 she founded Theatre Arts for Youth (TAFY) and in 1985 she founded Strings Alliance In Lincoln (SAIL) Music Camp. In 1992, Phoebe organized the LollyPop Concerts that brought members of the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra into the schools.
Her other involvements included serving on the Board of Directors of the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra, Nebraska Arts Council, Lincoln Arts Council, LIED Center, and the UNL Alumni Association, among others. Phoebe was an organizer and was able to inspire others to action through her passion.
The Hamann family has always believed in philanthropic gifting, and it is our hope that this bequest through LCF will help to make a difference in the community for many decades to come.

We both were raised in homes where our parents had stewardship roles in the Methodist Church and where tithing was practiced. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can."
We have been truly blessed by a benevolent God, and by having loving families, exceptional education, rewarding careers, good health and a safe, supportive community and state. We desire and are inspired to ensure that others may experience the same. QUOTE:
I am a native of Lincoln, Nebraska. Growing up in this community provided me with fond memories of many visits to Pioneers Park; picnics, climbing up to the Indian, and visits to see the bison, elk and many other animals. Then as I became a young adult, there was cross country skiing in the park. My father passed away when I was in grade school. Since my mother became a single parent, these experiences contributed to my desire to help women further educate themselves as they find their lives changing. My late husband, Dale, and I believe in helping the community and various charities with volunteer time and monetary gifts.

NARRATIVE:
Marguerite taught piano for more than 50 years. She also developed one of the very earliest preschools and she formed and conducted a unique rhythm and melody band composed of children ages 2-10. The band started in October of 1935 with 8 children who gathered in Marguerite's studio to make music and grew to over 100 children. They gave concerts annually and also played in churches, hospitals, and schools. Funds raised in concerts such as the one given for the Women's Club of the Temple Theater in 1939 and in conjunction with the Convention of the Nebraska Music Teachers' Association in 1941 were donated to charity. Many students who have made music their career have said, "Miss Hac, it all started here." Marguerite emphasized duo piano with her students. One of the pianos in her studio was a very fine Steinway which she purchased form the Palladian Literacy Society when it disbanded. Marguerite and Herbert Schmidt selected the piano for the organization at UNL. It was designated for eventual return to the Music Department at UNL. Marguerite also established scholarships in piano at the University of Nebraska.

NARRATIVE:
Mildred came to Lincoln during World War I to attend the University of Nebraska. She became a music teacher and spent a full career teaching at Bethany (1927-1941) and Lincoln High Schools. Former students have often attested and reflected on her skills and the quality of the fine operettas she presented at Bethany. She enjoyed Nebraska football, proudly flying her "Big Red" flag on home game days, and made a contribution towards construction of the original football stadium.
A line from Longfellow comes to mind, "And departing leave behind us. Footprints on the sand of time." Miss Kemp passed away four months before her 89th birthday. She was a lifelong member of Second Presbyterian Church, but one would suppose she saw her most important "footprints" as the impact on the children that came under her care for 40 years.

QUOTE:
We are Missourians by birth but Nebraskans by choice. We landed in Lincoln in 1988 with two young daughters. It was our third corporate move in five years, and we quickly decided to put down roots here to raise our family. We love our community and have been inspired by the generosity of so many of our neighbors. Our church recently celebrated its 150th anniversary, and we were so moved by the saints who sacrificed to make First Christian what it is today that we want to help secure its future. We're also committed to helping Camp Kaleo change the lives of campers, young and old. The staff and leaders at the Lincoln Community Foundation have enabled us to support those things that matter to us, and we are excited to be a small part of this important venture.

QUOTE:
When we were kids traveling from Central Missouri to Dallas, TX to visit our grandparents for holidays and summer vacations, our mom would pack a picnic basket for each trip and we would stop at a roadside park along the way to eat lunch. After we'd finish, my dad would announce, "okay, men (to his 4 daughters, which we thought was funny), now we're going to pick up all the trash we see and leave this place better than we found it." We would, indeed, pick up all the trash around the picnic area and dispose of it. I have never forgotten that lesson: we should leave things better than we found them. Whether we physically change a place through our labor, through volunteering our time or our resources, we can make the world a better place for those who come after us.
Lincoln, NE has been our home now for just over 34 years. We raised our two daughters here and have grown our drycleaning business over the last 26 years, meeting so many people in the process. We value the relationships developed through church, school, community and business. The Lincoln Community Foundation provides a way to give back to the community that has given so much to us. We are also blessed to be of the generation of "Baby Boomers" that inherited much from our parents - the "Greatest Generation" - and we want to share those blessings and lessons learned with future generations.

QUOTE:
We have enjoyed our lives in Lincoln, Nebraska. We love the history and our lives are better for the heritage of the Midwest and the culture of the Plains. We also have reached a point in our lives when we are considering how to provide for such a life experience for future Lincolnites, and we appreciate that the Lincoln Community Foundation is in the business of fostering new ideas and different solutions for the success of varied causes. We respect the structure of the Lincoln Community Foundation which accomplishes its work through a Board of Directors that is considerate, bold and innovative with a willingness to assume appropriate risk. It is our goal to have our contribution be guided by the Board of Directors rather than supporting only our own individual interests. By making this contribution, we believe that we are encouraging what is best for Lincoln by putting the decision-making in the capable hands of the Lincoln Community Foundation.

QUOTE:
We both were raised in homes where our parents had stewardship roles in the Methodist Church and where tithing was practiced. During our life's journey together, we have tried to exemplify this advice for daily living from John Wesley, founder of Methodism: "Do all the good you can. By all the means you can.
The Lincoln Community Foundation is in a unique position to have a comprehensive grasp of our community's diverse needs and resources. We have chosen to support, through a Benefactor gift, the needs of children now and for "as long as ever we can."

QUOTE:
“Lincoln, for those of us who were born and raised here, is too often taken for granted. That’s why it’s always a treat to hear from “transplants” who now live and work here commenting on how much they value the community, its assets, and its citizens, when they compare it to other locales they’ve called home. Whether we’re natives or newcomers, this city has provided outstanding resources to enrich our lives. The Lincoln Community Foundation is one of those remarkable resources and an ideal conduit to help us express gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the Lincoln experience.”

QUOTE:
It is our intent to leave our legacy not with 'things' but rather knowing that when we are gone, there will always be funds available in the Lincoln community to continue to support what we believed in. The benefactor program just makes sense for the first of our donations to LCF. This ensures that not one agency is the recipient of our funds, rather that the needs of the community at that time are being met. We also have Donor Advised funds specific to our personal interests. We are honored to partner with the Lincoln Community Foundation to leave our legacy.

Julie and I have been blessed to live, raise our family, and work in Lincoln. We have seen first-hand the many projects and organizations supported by the Lincoln Community Foundation through the generosity of Lincolnites before us.
As our family grew and our children matured, we had discussions about the importance and pleasure of giving back to our community. Her eldest child, Penny, states: "I have recently moved back to Lincoln after having been gone for 40 years. The first week I was back, I was invited to an event to honor the original founders of the Lincoln Community Foundation. Since my maternal grandfather, William Aitken, was one of those founders, and since his name begins with "A," I was the first to lead a parade of Lincoln family descendants onto a stage. Quite a re-introduction to Lincoln! I knew that night, that I wanted to give a large gift to the Foundation to honor my mother, Martha Greer, William's eldest daughter. My mother was an active, innovative leader in many Lincoln organizations for the arts, education and service. As I travel around Lincoln, many remember her unique presence and leadership style to this day. She is keenly missed."

NARRATIVE:
George Ward Holyoke was born on January 19, 1913 in Madrid, Nebraska. George was a man who loved a great many things in life, but none so much as people. He spent 40 years of his life in Lincoln, most of them as partner in the investment firm Ellis & Holyoke. He took deep pleasure in the trust his clients gave him to keep their futures safe. When people spoke of him, the first thing they mentioned was his sense of humor. He was funny because he was wise, kind, observant, and good with language.
George's pleasures were those of daily life: reading to his children at night (Tanglewood Tales was his favorite), cooking steaks on the grill, playing golf or cards with his many friends, lying on the floor in front of the stereo listening to Schubert. His taste in books extended from Will Cuppy and Pogo to Nabokov and Bellow, the anthropologist Loren Eiseley was closest to his heart. His idea of heaven was the Lake Fork of the Gunnison and a fry pan with a nine-inch trout.
George's grandfather and the man he was named after, George Ward Holdrege, was the general manager of Burlington Lines West. He helped lay the railroad lines out west, which was powerful in early Nebraska politics and the settlement of western Nebraska.

Woods, Jr. The Fund received significant gifts in the 1950s from Frank H. and Nelle C., primarily as a result of their business interests in Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph and Sahara Coal Company. During its first 54 years, Woods Charitable Fund provided grants to organizations in Lincoln, Nebraska, as well as Chicago, Illinois, because of family and business ties to those areas. In 1993, Woods Charitable Fund established a new private foundation in Illinois, which is known as the Woods Fund of Chicago. Woods Charitable Fund and the Woods Fund of Chicago are each governed by boards that respond to local needs in their respective cities.

QUOTE:
Being the first woman bank President in Lincoln and Omaha led to many opportunities in community service. Leading the Nebraska and American Bankers Associations made me a better banker and much more aware of the responsibilities that are involved in safeguarding depositors' funds.
My family now has four generations represented at Wyuka. I've had the opportunity to travel to many countries and I'm always proud of my Midwest heritage. Lincoln and Cornhusker Bank have given me many opportunities for personal growth over my lifetime. I hope my seven grandchildren will find their lives equally challenging and rewarding.
