QUOTE:
Donald Hamann was born with a natural gift for storytelling, a true interest in people, and a deep love for his family and community.

In 1957, after graduating from UNL in business, he joined his father as they assumed ownership of Lincoln’s first fine jewelry store, Sartor’s.  From then on, it became Sartor Hamann Jewelers.  Don was well known in the jewelry industry as President of Jewelers of America, Chairman of the Board of Jewelers Mutual Insurance, and was actively involved in other regional and national trade organizations.

As a local business leader, he was president of the Downtown Lincoln Association and active in the Chamber of Commerce.  Don and his wife Phoebe, were ardent supporters of many charities and foundations.  They were particularly passionate about supporting music and the arts as well as music education in the Lincoln Public Schools.

An avid gardener and rose lover, Don made a generous donation to the City of Lincoln in 2006 to assist in the complete renovation of the Municipal Rose Garden at 27th and “C” Streets.  In honor of his lead gift, the garden was renamed The Hamann Rose Garden.

The Hamann family has always believed in philanthropic gifting, and it is our hope that this bequest through LCF will help to make a difference in the community for many decades to come.
